Flow with Nature: Mindful Movement and Stillness with Yijin Jing

In our modern world, many people think of fitness as simply lifting weights or pushing the body to its limits. For years, students have approached me seeking a “workout”—to strengthen muscles, improve flexibility, or boost performance through Yijin Jing (Muscle and Tendon Transformation Practice) and Xisui Jing (Marrow Washing Practice).

I understand this mindset. When I started my journey three decades ago, I, too, saw these arts as advanced physical training. Over time, however, I realized something profound: these practices are much more than exercise.

Yijin Jing and Xisui Jing are tools to help you align your body, breath, and mind with the natural rhythms around you. The focus isn’t on doing more—it’s on moving wisely, sensing deeply, and restoring balance to your daily life.

The Core Principle: Balancing Motion and Stillness

Why are movement and stillness so important? The answer lies in our internal ecosystem.

Movement (Yang) awakens the body, encourages circulation, and releases tension.
Stillness (Yin) allows energy to integrate, supporting recovery, awareness, and calm.

Classical teachings say: “Use movement to dissolve stagnation; use stillness to restore balance.” This principle mirrors the cycles of nature—day and night, seasons, and the flow of life itself.

Tuning Into Natural Rhythms

The world around us moves in cycles:

Day to night: Activity flows into rest.
Seasons: Growth becomes harvest, then renewal.
Cosmos: Expansion is always followed by contraction.

Your body is designed to move in harmony with these cycles. Yet modern life often keeps us in constant motion, overstimulated, and disconnected from natural rhythms. Yijin Jing offers a way to gently reconnect—to create pulses of energy and rest that support balance and wellbeing.

How Yijin Jing Supports Mindful Movement

The beauty of this system is that it restores balance without overloading the body. It uses wisdom, not brute force, to regulate your energy.

  1. Yang Phase – Dynamic Activation
Goal: Gently awaken the body and encourage internal circulation.
Practice: Dynamic movements such as stretches, twists, and gentle lifts.
Tip: Coordinate breath with movement. Inhale as you extend, exhale as you release. Focus on fluid, mindful motion, not speed or intensity.
  2. Yin Phase – Integration and Stillness
Goal: Cultivate calm, awareness, and internal alignment.
Practice: Static holds, mindful pauses, and intentional stillness.
Tip: Focus inward. Feel your body rooting to the ground. Let your breath slow and your mind settle. This is a chance to integrate energy and support recovery.
The Flow Between Movement and Stillness

The magic happens in the transition between activity and stillness:

Movement leads to stillness: After a flowing sequence, the body naturally seeks calm.
Stillness leads to movement: From deep calm, the next action arises with precision and efficiency, using whole-body coordination rather than tension.

Over time, this practice enhances body awareness, energy management, and mindful presence.

Bringing It Into Daily Life

You don’t need to study ancient texts to start. Simple awareness is enough:

Dynamic movements: Visualize energy radiating from your core, warming your limbs, and opening joints.
Static postures: Focus inward, feel your skeleton grounding, and synchronize breath with subtle sensations.

Even brief sessions can help you feel more centered, aware, and connected to your body throughout the day.

Conclusion: The Path to Mindful Harmony

Yijin Jing and Xisui Jing are not just techniques—they are a practice of living in rhythm with nature. By balancing movement and stillness, you create a pathway to enhanced awareness, mindful energy, and holistic wellness.

This is the journey from seeing exercise as a routine to experiencing it as a living meditation, where every breath and movement connects you to yourself and the natural world.
